HOOKER ACTION
AN IN-PROGRESS
ART INSTALLATION
Observe the progress of HOOKER ACTION at 1UV Gallery Studio...
The term "hooker" comes from the history of traditional rug making. A tool with a small hook is used in the process of knotting rugs. Historically many of the women who wove traditional rugs along the Silk Road were unpaid family members or enslaved women. Many were forced into sexual servitude to "pay" for their room and board. All have gone without acknowledgment or recognition of their skill, talent, and labor.
Stop in 1UV Gallery Studio to see the progress of the loom I have been building to try my hand at this ancient craft. Of course I have a bit of a twist on the age old tradition...I am using this process to recycle used textiles that have come to the end of their wearable life. In modern day many of the countries that have been known for their traditional rugs are now centers for textile (and other materials) recycling. My work is meant to acknowledge and honor the efforts of those working to address the enormous problems of textile waste in modern society.
